Retired Msgt. William York, my husband, enlisted in the AF for 21.5 years (1976 until 1997). During his time at F. E. Warren AFB in Cheyenne, Wyoming; His Duty Title was Assistant Superintendent Hardened Intersite Cable Systems (HICS) Maintenance. (Then) Tsgt York helped to maintain the communication circuits between launch control centers and launch facilities in the Minuteman and the Peacekeeper missiles complex & all all other required equipment maintance from 1985 to 1989. Tsgt York was exposed to the toxin, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a waxy jelly like subtance that is used throughout the inter workings of the HICS where maintenance occurred. little did he know that his MOS he was ass, and when he joined the military service, it would be the direct cause of him developing pancreatic cancer stage 4. And appendiceal adenocarcinoma stage 2.5 to 3 a (very rare type of cancer so rare only 1 or 2 in a million each year), in the USA, get this very rare form. Both of these cancers listed on the presumptive disabilities are covered in the PACT act due to the cable maintenance he performed.
William was diagnosed on January 24th, 2023. We spent the next 11 months fighting for his life. To make a long story short, on December 1st, 2023, William went into surgery, and God delivered him from the cancers. William's condition after surgery was amazing. His recovery went great. He got his hair back and was gaining weight at a good pace.
We started our retirement journey.
Nonetheless, William started the adjuvant chemo recommended by his surgeon, Dr.Nassour, at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, Fl.. William started the couple of rounds of adjuvant chemo in March or April of 2024. This chemo made him sicker than the previous neochemo he had taken prior to any other treatment, William continued to get sicker. late in May of 2024, William made the decision to stop the chemo, he thought was "killing" him. Nonetheless, he continued to get sicker: could "not get any air", barely could walk to the BR, and could not lay down flat, for his breathing would become so servere, he wasn't getting enough oxygen for him to continue to live; unless he was standing.
Well, his condistion continued to worsen. June 2024, he developed fluid around his lungs and some around his heart, and his blood pressure went extremely high and wide. His current civilian doctors refused to do the gold stand diagnostics that would determine the cause: if the pancreatic CA had spread to his lungs or heart. Even when my righteous indication rose up due to my contemp and sense of the lack of morality in the health-care was receiving (I am a nurse, RN-BSN, for more than 50 years). "Just saying I had an old-fashioned hissy-fit; to no avail.
They all continue to refuse to order the diagnostics that I requested repeatedly. The treatment that was ordered (blindly) to treat the fluids that were collected around his lungs and some around his heart, in turn, decreased his kidney function to a 2.9 creatinine and qualified to have a nephrologist (not good)
After 3 stays in the hospital, the discharge nurse, not the doctor, told us about William's heart damages. That either was caused by the chemo or the radiation he received, or cancer metastasis to his lungs or heart, etc. ( Gold standard diagnostics would have told us) if it can or can not be reversed.
William's condition will continue to worsen unless God intervenes. We don't know how much time he has. It's truly up to God whether he wakes up every morning. Or NOT!
William would like to do some enjoyable things while he still can. He loves going and seeing new things, and his children and grandchildren mean the world to him. These are the things William talks about being able to do.
1. Go to Laurel, MS, where they
film Hometown and see Ben's workshop and see the houses they renovated, there in their hometown. This will take him longer than usual because he tires so easily.
2. He wants to take a coach bus for 4 or 5 days to go up through the and around the Carolinas, see the Ark, see the Hatfields and McCoy dinner show, etc. Again, he will have to have frequent rest stops/periods.
3. He wants to rent a place large enough to cater a meal for us to share with our kids and grandkids. And, to set up his slide projector so he can watch the many milestones of his life, with them: Chris, our son, Paula, our daughter and 10 grandchildren and their families. Only would be invited to this intimate gather.
His treatments and surgery at Shands in Gainesville took most of our savings. He plans to go to different doctors in different area(s) to find out the information he needs to make the wisest decisions. This is why I have set up this GoFundMe account to hopefully raise enough money for him to realize his wishes.
Thank you to each of you for helping William with this financial request.
May God bless you one in all,
William & Cathy York
