Help Will Practice Architecture

It's been a long time coming for Will to study architecture. Those who’ve known me for a while, and those who’re new know that architecture has been an incredible monument to the development of who I am and how I want to think. It was something I was striving for but had other priorities that distracted me from pursuing my real dream. During the pandemic, I finally made the decision to go to school and obtain a degree in architecture. What a tremendous change and uplifting experience it has been these past two years taking steps toward the realization of the person I’ve wanted to become for so long. From the two-year-old drawing high heels and simple box houses to going crazy with house and hotel design in the sims, to now using the 3D programs and applying skills to technical drawings and graphic design. It's been incredibly time-consuming and a lot of time stressful, but when I reassess, I reinstate that I'm in the right place at the right time. I’ve realized so many visions and ideas with the tools and capabilities I’ve acquired through school.

An opportunity has come into my life and I have been selected to practice with my two-time studio professor Gregory Melotoniv in an ongoing project he has created in Costa Rica, FUNdaMENTAL. (https://fundamentaldesignbuild.org/) The project “brings together 15 early-career architects and designers to realize an urban intervention, providing them with hands-on experience in design, construction, and community engagement with residents, local and global experts, and sponsor companies” and applies a “bottom-up” approach to design. In the program’s fifth year, we will be designing and building a space for the PI Art Festival which will be in Punta Islita, CR. We will be designing and planning materials in San Jose, CR, and then going to Punta Islita to assess the site and construct the building as a group in collaboration with Gregory’s chosen contractor Hector.

The program includes housing for two months, and the remaining expenses are my responsibility. Since I won’t be earning an income and living expenses have been difficult while being a student, I’ve made this gofundme to gather family and friends to help raise money for a very exciting opportunity for my career. I would greatly appreciate any assistance in paying for the following.

The round-trip airplane ticket prices for my dates are currently $550.

I’ve spoken with participants from previous years and living expenses, food, and travel around the city are about $500/per month ($1000).

I will need to continue helping my partner with my portion of the rent while I’m away is $850/per month ($1,700).

Donors of $250+ will receive biweekly postcards with project and adventure updates (from June 1 to August 1st). On stationary made with my own illustrations or from local shops in CR!
