If you haven’t had the pleasure already… meet Murphy! (Yes she’s a girl, her name comes from Interstellar). She’s around 10 to 11 months old & had an unfortunate start to life.

As most of you know I, her foster mom, am an Emergency Veterinary Technician, and we see a lot of animals coming in with many stories and backgrounds. Murphy was brought into the clinic around 4am on one of my night shifts back in December 2024. Good Samaritans, EMT’s also on night shift, witnessed this 6lb puppy be thrown from a car and left for dead. They scooped her up and got her to us where we learned she was experiencing paralysis from the waste down. Her lip was busted open and tongue bleeding from her teeth lacerating them most likely when hitting the ground… but she was a fighter!

After quickly realizing this puppy would be turned away by local rescues and shelters or euthanized I decided to foster her myself. Come February I had to make the choice to financially back her recovery myself or euthanize her, again due to lack of resources and space, via the hospitals rules for how long we can help animals in this way while being funded by the hospital.

February 2025 I made the choice to take financial responsibility for Murphy and her recovery because she was determined to show everyone she’s still a silly, cuddly, loving puppy that deserves to be loved back!

She’s been Spayed, fully vaccinated, hasn’t missed a dose of Simparica trio since being with me, and always being rechecked by the Veterinarians at my clinic.

CUT TO WHY WE ARE RAISING $

Murphy walks, yes, but it’s exhausting for her so she still drags her rear end this led to her developing bone spurs and injuries to her tail. She doesn’t have feeling in her tail, which is better than to be in pain, however to avoid later injuries and further growth of bone spurs we have decided it’s best to amputate her tail. Now the tail amputation is not costly as I do get a discount being as I’m an employee however $452 of what we are raising is to cover the cost of the wheelchair that will best fit her long term needs now that she is done growing. This wheelchair is important not only as a lifelong aid, but to ensure she can properly heal from the amputation. Post-op injury to the surgical sight can result in further spinal injuries, complication, and even spinal infection.

Unfortunately, as many of us know, the veterinary field (and most animal rescue/rehab) work is underpaid if paid at all. So here’s where I’m asking for the help of my animal people, let’s get Murphys surgery and recovery on the roll!! (Get it?..roll… wheelchair…)
