HELP WEDGEWORTH ELEMENTARY FIGHT UNEQUAL TREATMENT
The School Board approved a permanent facility in 2019. Now, a new School Board threatens the future of the elementary school.
The school should be built because:
1. It is the only school in the School District that is comprised of 100% portable trailers. Not a single permanent structure exists on campus.
2. There are four restrooms for 600 students.
3. School children hold in their urine.
4. Children consistently face sewage problems, and in some instances, sewage seeps into classrooms.
5. There are rodent and pest infestations.
6. The school is the only school in the School District without a cafeteria or kitchen.
7. Without a school kitchen, food is trucked in from outside, and many school children eat cold lunches.
8. There is no cafeteria, and thus insufficient seating for lunch. Half of the children eat their food outside regardless of inclement weather.
9. The school is significantly underfunded in the district compared to other parts of the School District, who receive 27% more funding than the school.
10. There is little playground space for the children.
11. Even teachers and staff have inadequate restroom facilities, with a ratio of two restrooms for 30 staff members.
The elementary school is a nationally-recognized Blue Ribbon School, with a dual immersion program in Mandarin. In part because of its language program, it has been the target of Asian Hate from the community at large. Those racist postings include:
- #AssimilateOrBuildYourOwnSchool
- “You’re not getting your special little school for your special little group of self-segregating Asian kids whose parents don’t want them mixing”
- #BuildYourOwnPrivateSchool
- “how many of them [Wedgeworth parents] can vote? My guess is very little. Why again am I building them a Chinese school?”
- “[T]he goal should be to improve the entire district, not just one special little school that makes the Tiger moms happy that their spoiled entitled little brats are not mixing with all of the Latino kids.”
- “What if we do not want to draw people in? Hacienda Heights has been a desirable town for decades.”
- “I tried to speak with some of the Wedgeworth students .. but there seems to be a language barrier.”
- “[T]his [is] [A]merica not [C]hina”
- “[School Board member] Mr. Chang is attacking the other Board Members because he wants that ugly school to be built. That Asian Man needs to be out of the Board”
- “Not all of us believe that Communist China holds the best interest of our kids[sic] education. In fact, I oppose exposing our American children to ALL Communist counties [sic] tradition or culture.”
Two current Board Members are opposed to construction of the new school. One Board Member has made racially insensitive comments about Asian Americans (in addressing the school generally) and the other has a clear conflict of interest requiring her to abstain from voting on the school's future.
Please help donate to support our demands:
- CONSTRUCTION OF A K8 SCHOOL, AS APPROVED BY THE PREVIOUS SCHOOL BOARD
- BOARD MEMBER CHRISTINE SALAZAR BE PRECLUDED FROM ANY DISCUSSION OR VOTE ON THE WEDGEWORTH SCHOOL PROJECT
- BOARD MEMBER STEPHANIE SERRANO BE CENSURED AND INVESTIGATED FOR HER RACIALLY INSENSITIVE COMMENTS ABOUT ASIAN-AMERICANS
- PUT A STOP TO ASIAN HATE
