Hey there, this is TJ on behalf of Melissa Mendelson and her dog, Watkins.
Melissa is currently at the BluePearl Duluth emergency vet with Watkins, one of her beloved sled dogs. Watkins is being hospitalized for pneumonia. While Watkins is insured, there is no guarantee they will cover his emergency stay. Additionally, when he makes it through the night, he will need to be sent to the University of Minnesota for additional care. His hospitalization at BluePearl just for overnight is over $4,000. When he moves to the U of M, there is not currently an estimate for the price of care. We are setting the goal at $10k; however, we will adjust as needed.
Watkins is more than just a sled dog. Many of you have followed along Melissa’s journey with Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia, a genetic disorder Watkins has. Melissa has been working with the University of Minnesota to make information and genetic testing on PCD accessible. Watkins is the literal poster child for PCD.
But more than this, Watkins is Melissa’s family. He’s a dog who has consistently made her race team, despite PCD. He’s a pro sled dog and an important part of the pack. When I visit Melissa, Watkins is always the happiest little guy, happy for pets and loving.
Watkins is a trooper, but Melissa needs help so we can keep him earthside. Melissa isn’t one to ask for help. But she REALLY needs our help.
If you are able to donate, any amount will help Melissa get Watkins through this hospitalization and on to the additional care he may need at the University of Minnesota.
Any funds raised beyond his immediate veterinary expenses, along with any insurance reimbursement, will be set aside specifically for Watkins’ future medical care.
If you can’t donate, sharing this fundraiser can help tremendously.
Thank you for helping give this sweet, snotty, sneezing little goofball the chance to come home.
