Help us protect our urban trees throughout WA.

Perth has the lowest urban tree canopy of any Australian capital city, but our planning system still allows hundreds of mature trees to be cleared every day. We're creating hotter suburbs and urban heat islands that won't be healthy, liveable places for our children and grandchildren.

WA Tree Canopy Advocates (WATCA) is a volunteer-led, not-for-profit organisation run by everyday people (with day jobs!) who care deeply about our trees and the communities they support.

Since WATCA was established in late 2023, we've brought together more than 30 local community groups across Western Australia and helped put urban tree loss firmly on the public and political agenda.

We've helped push the WA Government to commit to a 30% tree canopy target and supported more than 10 local governments to adopt tree retention policies that help protect mature trees on private land.

We're proud of what we've achieved, but there's still SO MUCH more to do to stop this massive tree loss.

Major gaps remain in WA's planning framework, including the widespread clearing of trees to create new suburbs and the lack of meaningful protections for mature trees on private land.
