My name is Bronwen Talley-Coffey from Clyde, NC, and I have been a friend of Warren Stafford (Greenville, SC) for 15 years and his wife, Jessica, for 11 years.
This GoFundMe account has been set up to help Warren Stafford, age 33. He is a husband to Jessica and father of two boys, ages 2 and 9 months. He is also a son, brother, and friend. He works hard as a certified auto mechanic and Jessica is a dental hygienist.
Warren fell ill with what he believed to be a head cold the weekend of September 21st. After experiencing a severe headache and numbness in his hands and feet, he and his wife became very concerned. Jessica took him to the emergency room and on Monday, September 23rd, he was admitted to the hospital with loss of feeling from the waist down, and was no longer able to walk. After a CT scan and MRIs, Warren had a spinal tap that diagnosed him with Guillain-Barré syndrome.
Guillain-Barré syndrome is a rapid-onset muscle weakness caused by the immune system damaging the peripheral nervous system. During the acute phase, the disorder can be life-threatening, with about 15% developing weakness of the breathing muscles requiring mechanical ventilation. In those with severe weakness, prompt treatment with intravenous immunoglobulins or plasmapheresis, together with supportive care, will lead to good recovery in the majority of people. Recovery may take weeks to years. About a third have some permanent weakness. Globally, death occurs in about 7.5% of those affected. Guillain–Barré syndrome is rare, at one or two cases per 100,000 people every year. (This information comes from Wikipedia.)
At this time, Warren has received several plasmapheresis and continues to breathe on his own. Jessica has remained at his side and takes breaks to go home and be with their children. She is not able to work at this time. This has been extremely difficult for Warren, Jessica, and their children.
The purpose of this GoFundMe account is to provide funds for medical costs not covered by insurance and household expenses incurred while both Warren and Jessica are out of work. His wife plans to return to work when he is released from the hospital. Warren’s recovery time is unknown and it could be a year or more before he can return to work.
Warren has been a friend of mine for over 15 years. I don’t know anyone who has worked as hard as he has to provide from himself and his family.
