Help Walter so he can continue saving lives

Who is Walter?
Walter is first of all a dear friend to us, and a very important part of LifeLine1’s work in Uganda as he is our main connection to the medical world in the region. Without him we would not have been able to gain momentum in our charity work as fast as we have already. Walter is irreplaceable to us, as a friend as well as a partner in charity work.

Walter works as a medical supervisor in the Zion Community Medical Clinic where he passionately serves vulnerable people in need, free of charge. (The clinic is responsible for a population of 25.000 people) Besides the clinic, he even handles patients out of his own home. Walter considers his charity work a top priority, and as something he was born to do, so it kills him that he is now unable to contribute to his community in a such manner.

In order to put food on the table and help provide for his family, Walter works with public service as a medical doctor, where he performs clinical assessment and surgeries.
At the public facility he is responsible for a population of 30.000 people, with a main focus on pregnant women, children and elderly.

Through his unshakable passion and determination, Walter rapidly climbed the medical ranks in his region and was just recently promoted to Senior Medical Supervisor, after only 4 years of service as a medical doctor. As a Senior Medical Supervisor Walter is now responsible for supervising all hospitals in the greater Mbale region.

Besides his medical work he works with community development where he encourages youths to be self-sustaining. By spearheading income generating projects such as a 525 chicken poultry to generate an income to cater for charitable costs of community service.

Walter's condition
In October 2020 Walter started experiencing the strong symptoms of kidney failure and he could feel that it was getting harder and harder to probably do his work. He was then treated with dialysis for 1 year and 8 months after which he needed a kidney transplant, a procedure that cost him and his family roughly 26.800USD - They had to take loans in multiple places and gather funds by selling their cows and piggery to raise every shilling they could.

After the transplant he was put on immunosuppressant medications to protect the new kidney from his own immune system. Everything was going well at this point - Walter was back at work, saving people every single day, strong as ever.

It was not until lately he started feeling very ill, with strong pain in his stomach, vomiting, oedema and abdominal distension. He was unable to eat for 3 weeks, due to indigestion, which further worsened his health. After thorough testing it was found that his immunosuppressant medication had lowered his immune system so much, that an opportunistic cancer called Kaposi Sarcoma had manifested itself in his gastrointestinal tract…

He was diagnosed on 25th of August and started chemotherapy on the 30th, the next dose will be on September 13th and every 2 weeks thereafter for a total of 6 doses. We are happy to say that the medicine has proven very effective, as Walter is now able to ingest non-solids and his vomiting has improved.

Unfortunately, Walter and his friends and family are unable to come up with the funds themselves to continue his treatment and we therefore all ask for YOUR help, so that he can continue saving lives far into the future.

Walter is without a doubt irreplaceable, not only because of his responsibilities and great work as a doctor - with no other senior doctor able to take his place, but also because he is a dear friend to us all, who has been there for everyone around him regardless of his own condition. Everyone that we (LifeLine1) have spoken to who knows him, has nothing but praise. He is loved by his family, friends and broad community.

In order to pay for his medical bills, Walter and his family have had to sell their livestock. They are all working very hard to gather funds for the medical bills to pay for the chemotherapy and immunosuppressants due to his kidney transplant.

Please donate here to help Walter get back on his feet, so he can once again continue saving the lives of thousands. Saving Walter not only saves on man but many.

We are raising a total of 6.619.000Ugx which amounts to approximately 12.500DKK

Thank you.
