On the evening of January 17, during a live performance with his musical partner Samantha Whelan Kotkas, something unexpected and frightening happened.
Walter became very unwell on stage. At first, it looked like he might have fainted, but it quickly became clear that this was much more serious. People in the room stepped in right away to help, and an ambulance was called. Their quick action made all the difference.
Walter experienced a ruptured brain aneurysm, which caused significant bleeding in his brain. He was taken to Foothills Hospital and admitted to the Intensive Care Unit, where he is now receiving excellent care.
Who is Walter:
Walter McDonald White Bear is a Cree Knowledge Keeper, singer-songwriter, educator, and speaker. He is originally from Moose Factory First Nation in Ontario and has spent decades sharing music, stories, and teachings with people of all ages and abilities across Canada.
Walter’s work comes from lived experience, care, and deep cultural knowledge. Through his music and speaking, he has supported students, educators, community groups, and people working in justice, wellness and social services. Folks who know Walter can attest to his being someone who shows up with kindness, honesty and a good sense of humour.
He gives so much to others, and now, he needs time and support to heal.
How Walter Is Doing Now:
Walter is still in the ICU, but he has regained consciousness. He is eating and drinking on his own and has shared smiles, short conversations, and moments of humour.
He will be transferred to the neuro acute unit when a bed becomes available. Eventually, he will also spend time in neuro rehab. The doctors expect a long healing journey, and it is not yet known when (or if) Walter will be able to return to work.
Why We Are Asking for Help:
Walter will be in the hospital for at least several more weeks or months. After that, he is likely to need continued rest, care, and rehabilitation.
This fundraiser has been created by Walter’s family and friends to help cover basic living costs, housing and rehabilitation. It will be administered by family while he focuses on recovery. Right now, the most important thing for Walter is to rest and heal; without the stress of worrying about income or bills.
How You Can Support:
If Walter or his work has ever touched your life, through music, teaching, story, or friendship, we would be grateful if you could consider making a donation.
Any amount helps. If you’re not able to give right now, sharing this page is another powerful way to support Walter.
Thank you for caring, for reading, and for holding Walter in your thoughts as he continues to heal.
With gratitude,
Walter’s Family and Friends
