Earlier this year, my brother Wade Becker had the unfortunate experience of being scammed out of $25,000.00. He owns and operates a culvert sales business in SE Arkansas. During a routine purchase from his supplier, his sales rep's email was hacked. Through his sales rep’s email, the scammer replied to an email Wade had sent and was given the message of a needed change in bank info. Since email is how they normally communicate and this latest information seemed to come from his trusted rep, he didn’t question and followed the instructions given. Also the scammer had somehow blocked the rep from seeing the email conversation with Wade about the change in banking info, so he had no idea what was going on. It took a day or so for Wade to realize something was not right. Wade contacted the bank and used all the resources available to stop the transaction but was not able to. After that, he tried to work with his culvert supplier to see if they could reimburse some of the money, since it was their email that was hacked. They did eventually give him $5,000.00.
