Help Local Barber Recover After Attack

Growing up in Mosby Court, one of the big six public housing communities in Richmond, Virginia, Von Johnson witnessed violence and death on a regular basis. But through a strong belief in himself, a higher power and the community around him, he survived against almost insurmountable odds. In fact, until he was viciously attacked, he and his family were finally thriving.

Two days before Thanksgiving, Von was trying to be a peacemaker in a situation that quickly turned violent. Eerily like a scene from a television show or movie, the aggression unexpectedly turned on Von as he was beaten down and pistol-whipped unmercifully. He suffered devastating injury to his jaw and head and ended up in the hospital for emergency surgery. And as this bad luck turned worse, his jaw would have to remain wired shut for at least six weeks.

This senseless attack threatens all that Von has worked so hard to achieve. Since he was a child, he always wanted to be a barber. After many years of fighting through struggles in his own life in the projects, he recently opened his very own shop. And because of his contagious laugh and good-natured personality, he was doing very well. His future was brighter than ever before. Now, because of the injuries he sustained, he will be out of work for weeks. The medical expenses are starting to pile up, the rent and bills need to be paid and food will need to be put on the family table.

Von Johnson is a generous, caring man who fearlessly works to make a better life for his family and neighbors who still live in public housing communities. With the holidays approaching and the pandemic limiting opportunities for family and friends to be with Von in person, we have the opportunity to give Von and his family the love and compassion he has always selflessly shown others.

Please consider making a donation of any size to help cover Von's medical and living expenses during the rough road ahead to recovery.

If you'd like to see first hand what a beautiful person Von truly is and how much he does for his community, we encourage you to stream Belltower Pictures documentary, HEARD for free, which premiered on PBS in central Virginia November 12. Thank you.
