Vlad is a vibrant 5-year-old Kakariki parrot who has brought so much joy and happiness to our family, especially to my sister Kate who is his owner. Since the day he joined our family, he and Kate have been inseparable. He wakes her up each morning by hopping into bed and chatting away (lots of “what you doing” and “hello”). He’s her favorite hiking buddy, and they’ve explored the world together. Although I (Vlad’s aunt) have faced Vlad’s wrath on occasion (he does NOT like bare feet), he is genuinely the most adorable and lively pet I’ve ever met, and he has much more life to live.

Recently, Vlad started acting differently. He’s been lethargic, eating less, and has a notable weak grip on one leg. After a visit to the vet we found out Vlad has cancer and needs to have his leg amputated to survive. The surgery will cost $2,200, and if Vlad needs CPR during the procedure, it will be an additional $400. We want to give Vlad the best chance to live a long life—Kakariki pets can normally live up to 20 years, and Vlad is still just a little baby.
