Please Help Rebuild a Safe Home for Virgie, Jamie & Justin
Hi everyone, my name is Angie, and I need your help.
I’m reaching out on behalf of my sister, Virgie, and her two incredible sons, Jamie and Justin. Both of my nephews live with disabilities.
I'm asking for help for my sister who is dealing with a heavy mold issue in her home discovered by a leveling of cabinets in the kitchen that appeared to be coming off the ceiling on the rear wall of her home.
What started as a simple level of both upper & lower kitchen cabinets, the update quickly turned into a serious and unexpected crisis. While adjustments to the lower cabinets was being done the dishwasher water inlet valve apparently broke off. Unknowne to anyone because it's in the back of the cabinet. A few days later my sister ran the dishwasher before bed, and woke up to standing water in the downstairs of the house (kitchen and dining area). While assessing where the water came from she got under the lower sink cabinet and when she went to grab the water line that runs to the dishwasher her hand nearly went through the bottom of the cabinet, no water just damp and spongy. Call a contractor.
As contractors began investigating further, the damage was found to be far more widespread—all the water had run under the cabinets affecting not only the kitchen and dining area floors but also two bathroom walls behind the sink that share the kitchen walls. So here we are.
This mold poses a significant health risk, especially for Jamie and Justin, whose conditions already make them more vulnerable to environmental hazards. Their home, which should be a place of safety and comfort, is now in urgent need of major reconstruction just to be livable again.
To make matters worse, the day after the mold discovery
Virgie called her homeowners insurance (Allstate) and they sent someone out twice, and still the claim was denied stating the mold was too old. leaving her to shoulder the full financial burden of tearing out damaged areas, remediating the mold, and rebuilding essential parts of the home. The estimated costs are overwhelming, and this is not something she can manage on her own.
Virgie took out a loan against her vehicle but it wasn't enough to cover the repairs iao $35K. Finally, throw in a hotel bill for the 2-3 weeks time quoted for repairs. Again, out of pocket. Oh, and hiring help to move Jamie, Justin and all their equipment to the hotel as the mold was starting to affect them all. Not once but twice because the ADA room was too small in the first hotel.
My sister is an amazing person, mom, sister and friend. There is nothing she can't or won't do for anyone. She's always the first to offer help to anyone who asks. She's been a personal caregiver for many who have asked because not everyone has that knowledge and expertise. I've seen her care for many people who were bedridden and in their final days. She possesses a kind of strength for personal caregiving most people run from. She's being brought through a rough season and it's breaking my heart to see her deal with all of this on her own. I begged her to let me open this GoFundMe for her. Her first response was I want to try to do it myself. Then things just kept getting worse. By the time the contractor left on the second day the amount of the fix went from $15K to $30K in a matter of a day. As of today the amount is up to $35,000.00.
Today Justin was hospitalized for a shunt and colon issue and our disabled brother who is also hospitalized that Virgie cares for (laundry, grocery shopping, etc) as well had an emergency amputation of his foot. So now she'll be working on finding him housing as well because he can't live alone any longer.
We are asking for your help. Any financial donations will be greatly appreciated. Every donation, no matter the size, will go directly toward making their home safe again.
If you’re unable to give, sharing this fundraiser would mean just as much. Please, please consider helping. She needs help, some relief. She's strong, no doubt. But she's human. She, Jamie, and Justin together have always faced life’s challenges with strength, courage and grace. From the bottom of my heart, "Thank you",
Thank you, in advance for your kindness, generosity and support. May you all find Peace and happiness within. Again, God Bless you all.
With the sincerest of gratitude,
