Several years ago, I was diagnosed with an eye condition that could one day impact my vision. In 2000, I first wrote the word "Glaucoma" in my appointment book, though at the time, I didn't fully grasp it's seriousness. What made my case unique was that it was unusually advanced for someone my age.

I began treatment with eye drops, but in 2007, while traveling in Chicago and under significant stress, I ran out of my medication. My occular pressure rose dangerously high-something I could physically feel, though I had no way of measuring it.

In 2008, I underwent surgery on my left eye to reduce the pressure. Despite being declared legally blind in 2012, I was determined not to let this stop me. With the aide of glasses, I continued teaching, researching, driving, and helping other's. However, my vision steadily declined, and in 2018 I could no longer drive.

Since 2022 I have been unable to see the color of grass or the cars parked on the street. Emotional stress significantly impacts my remaining vision, which is estimated at only 1 - 5%.

Despite these challenges, I have not given up hope. Recently I was introduced to an incredible technology called OrCam, which could change my life. OrCam is a device that can be handheld or mounted on eyewear. It can read text, identify objects, and even recognize faces, giving me the ability to "see" through sound. This technology would allow me to regain independence, read and research, return to school, and resume helping others, as I've done for decades.

Unfortunately, the OrCam devices are costly. That's why I'm reaching out for your support. Your contribution will help me acquire this life-changing technology and allow me to continue sharing my gifts with the world.
