My father is the sole caretaker for my mother, who is disabled and living with dementia. Their only income, aside from minimal social security, was from a long-term renter in Lahaina, Maui. When the devastating fires happened over two years ago, the property was completely destroyed and has been unusable ever since. The renters, who had been able to continue paying thanks to insurance, recently let us know they are terminating their lease effective immediately. While they are well within their rights, this leaves my dad with no income at all, starting today. As a Vietnam veteran, my father has always done his best to provide for our family, and now he is facing an incredibly difficult situation as he cares for my mom around the clock.
I am doing everything I can to apply for every VA benefit and public assistance program available, but these processes take time. In the meantime, I am hoping to raise enough money to keep my parents in their home, cover their monthly housing expenses, food, continued medical care, and utility bills. Every dollar raised will go directly to supporting their most urgent needs and helping them stay safe and secure during this uncertain time.
If you've ever met my dad, you know he is a giver of himself. He gives his time, talent, and heart to everyone he meets. If he's ever taken a photo of you, your dog, your wedding, your fiancé, your kids, or touched your life in some way through his generosity and care, please consider donating to help him make ends meet. It could be years before Lahaina will allow commercial zoning and permitting to take place, so it could be years before we have renters again. Your support, whether through a donation or by sharing this fundraiser, would mean the world to our family.
