Victoria Mena is a wonderful mother of 2 and grandmother of 4 beautiful grandchildren, whom she has helped raised. She is a bright woman who is always happy and full of life. In the pandemic, she lost her beloved brother (August 2020) and not too long after that, she lost her eyesight from one day to the next in January 2021. After months of trying to restore her vision and get some answers, she was diagnosed with leber hereditary optic neuropathy (LHOD). Vision loss results from the death cells in the nerve that relays visual information from the eyes to the brain (the optic nerve).
The only hope that we have left is participation in the follow up clinical trial to the successful Stem Cell Ophthalmology Treatment Study (SCOTS). SCOTS2, the new clinical trial starting soon, could restore part of her vision and prevent her from going completely blind. Because it's a federal clinical trial, our health insurance will not cover any of the costs. Your donations will fund her participation in the clinical trial and hopefully restore her eyesight. Without your help, she will never regain her eyesight. She will never be able to see her children or grandchildren again or function by herself in her home.

En la pandemia, perdió a su querido hermano (Agosto de 2020) y poco después de eso, perdió la vista de un día para otro en Enero de 2021. Después de meses de intentar restaurar su visión y de conseguir algunas respuestas, la diagnosticaron con la neuropatía óptica hereditaria de leber (LHOD). La pérdida de visión es el resultado de las células de la muerte en el nervio que transmite información visual de los ojos al cerebro (el nervio óptico).
La única esperanza que nos queda es la participación en el ensayo clínico de seguimiento del exitoso Estudio de Tratamiento Oftalmológico con Células Madre (SCOTS). SCOTS2, el nuevo ensayo clínico que comenzará pronto, podría restaurar parte de su visión y evitar que se quede completamente ciega. Debido a que es un ensayo clínico federal, nuestro seguro de salud no cubrirá ninguno de los costos. Sus donaciones financiarán su participación en el ensayo clínico y, con suerte, restaurarán su vista. Sin su ayuda, nunca recuperará la vista. Nunca podrá volver a ver a sus hijos o nietos, ni funcionar sola en su hogar.
