In the summer of 2019, I worked in the Ecuadorian Amazonian Rainforest with an organization called “Amisacho Restoracion” which use Fungi (mushrooms) to remediate toxic soil, specifically oil spills, caused by Chevron Texaco in the 70s.
The surrounding communities of Amazonia, specifically Indigenous communities and lands are still feeling the effects today as the slow violence of large neoliberal corporations tarnish the earth and peoples. This is the familiar and ever recurring story of colonialism.
I fell completely in love with this work, with the people and with Mushrooms!! In the words of eco-activist Dr. Vandana Shiva, “[the time has come to choose] Soil NOT oil!”
This is my PhD thesis at UCL, University of London and as an international student, I am purely revenue. My fees are £21,580 a year and the funding packages are quite limited especially given COVID-19. I really need help funding my second year as I want to continue this heart-centered work!
I truly believe that the work of listening to nature and acting in ways that go against capital will lead to alternative ways of living and being together in the world.
