My name is Victoria Martinez and I am an artist and educator from Pilsen. This fall I will begin
the Masters in Fine Art program at Yale University School of Art, a longtime dream of mine. I am the daughter of two immigrant parents and will be the first person in my family to achieve a Masters degree in the arts, which will be very impactful for my life and what I can offer to the community in the future. I was raised in the Pilsen neighborhood, which has influenced my career as an artist and motivated me to give back to my community by being a teaching artist. I am grateful that I have been able to achieve various successes including being an artist-in-residence at the University of Chicago Arts Incubator, exhibiting various times at the National Museum of Mexican Art, and launching a three-year community based project through Urban Gateways. Chicago has immensely supported my artistic vision and I believe that I have the responsibility of sharing my knowledge with younger generations. It is my hope that the arts can inspire young people to pursue a creative career in the arts and realize the positive impact it can have in their communities.
I am going to Yale School of Art in order to further my education and my goal is to continue to give back to youth in Chicago. My artistic strengths would not exist today if I had not grown up in Chicago and experienced mentoring and collaborating with youth across various neighborhoods.
I am going to be renting a U-haul truck on August 15th to move my belongings from Chicago to New Haven, Connecticut so I can begin my studies at Yale School of Art. The grand total is $2,500. This price includes $1,500 for a one-way truck rental including insurance, $600 for gas, and $400 for moving materials, toll ways, and unforeseen costs along the road.
Any type of contribution would be greatly appreciated from my end. Donors who give $50 or more will receive a handmade screen print in exchange. I currently produced a new series of screen prints for the University of Chicago that I plan on giving away specifically for this cause.
