Hey friends,
I’m Vicky Shahjehan, an artist, muralist, and storyteller from Colombo, Sri Lanka. A lot of my work takes place in Slave Island (Kompannavidiya), where I collaborate with women, queer folk, and other communities to tell stories that are often overlooked or erased.
Over the past few years, I’ve been involved in public art projects, performances, installations, and community workshops, all rooted in memory, identity, resistance, and care. I’ve worked with collectives like Fearless Collective, House of Kal, and TransFigure Lanka, and my work has been featured in publications like Groundviews, Daily Mirror (Sri Lanka), and Kal Rituals.
Some of the murals I’ve helped create centre women who have experienced displacement and social stigma, many of whom are from the same neighbourhood my grandmother was born in. Through trust, storytelling, and collaboration, we’ve turned walls into living archives of resilience.
Right now, I’m raising funds to buy an iPad, and I could really use your support.
This iPad would help me:
1. Sketch mural ideas quickly and digitally during workshops
2. Design and illustrate stories more efficiently
3. Archive and document my work properly
4. Create zines, illustrations, and hybrid art
5. Collaborate with other artists (especially internationally)
At the moment, I do most of my work by hand or with borrowed equipment, which makes things harder, especially when working on tight timelines or with community partners.
If you’ve ever felt moved by my work, shared it, or believe in using art to tell important stories, I’d be so grateful if you could contribute or spread the word.
Thanks for all the love and encouragement, let’s keep making art that matters.
