My name is Vicki Johnson. I was born in Georgia, but have lived in Oklahoma for the past 27 years. My husband and I live near Ada, Oklahoma. I have been an RN for 45 years, 13 years in the US Air Force Nurse Corps, and 27 years with the Norman Regional Health System.
My great loves are nursing, horses, and riding. When I was a child, people took time to share their horses with me. For years I have been sharing hre great experience of teaching children to ride. My goal has been to retire and start a nonprofit horseback riding program.
But things happen. I had been experiencing right hip and leg pain for about two years. It was often diagnosed as pulled muscles. On September 23rd I was leading a hourse in from the pasture when I experianced a horrible pain in my right groin, and fell to the ground, unable to walk.
After tests it was discovered that I had chondrosarcoma, a rare bone cancer that affects about 1 out of 200,000 people. I had a mass in my pelvic area that was the size of a grapefruit.
Surgery to remove it was on December 5th, 2025 and took 13 hours, with multiple teams of physicians. Most of my right pelvis, right hip, top of thhe right femur, part of S1, S2, and S3 were removed. Recovery period is typically 14-16 months, and I was not expected to ride or walk again after surgery.
Reconstruction was not done due to the extent of the cancer. There is a gap between what is left of my pelvis and my upper leg.
Post-op I spent five days in ICU, did ok, and was sent to rehab. The day before being discharged from rehab, I was sent back to the medical center for wound infection. It only took two and a half weeks, four additional operations, and plastic surgery to finally successfully close my wound. I am now back in rehab learning to walk on my right leg.
The purpose of the "Go Fund Me'" is to purchase an all-terrain mobility chair to get around the ranch on, help with the astronomical medical bills, and make wheelchair-access changes to our home.
Finally, my retirement goal is still to have a non-profit horseback riding program. I want to share the hope, joy, and love experienced with horses, with children of all ages.
Thanks, Vicki.
