Help Vette Build a Dream: The Reclamation Project
Hi! I'm Sara- a friend and cheerleader of Vette Christy's. Yevette Christy is in the business of building restorative community. I met her when she walked into my then fitness studio, The Dailey Method, looking for a fitness home. I didn’t know it at the time, but this woman would be my reminder to keep faith as I battled against Covid 19 to keep my business alive. There was something about Vette that I couldn’t figure out at first, but it wasn’t long before I noticed that her presence in my studio had made a difference. Vette wasn’t there just to move her body; she was there in pursuit of her very best self. It came to my attention that Vette had written a memoir. One of our instructor staff put together a brief reading night for her. It was then that I came to understand who she was: what it meant for her to take care of her body, and be a part of a community of women who weren’t afraid to dream!
I asked Vette if I could read her unpublished memoir, and I was blown away. Vette’s life didn’t begin like most. At six she was being sexually abused by a family member on a regular basis, and at nine her mother and step-father introduced her to drugs and alcohol. At eleven her mother went to prison, and at thirteen her step-father murdered her three-year-old step-brother in the family home. After going through the foster care system Vette would end up on the streets battling an addiction that had begun before she left elementary school. After twenty-eight years of striving to overcome her past, of doing the work, Vette wrote her story, Whore, A Sex Worker's Journey. She also became an elder in the United Methodist Church, and is currently working on her Doctor of Ministry degree at Brite Divinity School. Beyond her academic work, Vette is a single Mama that has begun The Reclamation Project, a not-for-profit social service organization that is seeking to reclaim motel properties that have been used to facilitate the drug/sex industry. Her vision is to purchase, and renovate these properties and provide a housing resource for sex work survivors.
Several weeks ago, Vette forwarded me an email that she was down to twenty-dollars in graduate aid, and that she would need to secure personal loans to finish her program. As her friend, I’m asking for your help so that Vette can finish out her education without incurring more student loan debt than she already has. All donations will go directly to covering Vette's classes, and her on-campus housing. I thank you in advance for supporting my friend! I know she will do great things for the community.
You can submit a donation here, or, if you would prefer to send directly to Vette’s student account, please send checks to:
