I know all too well the struggles that come with expressing your most authentic self. The harassment and ridicule that people use to subjugate my trans body. The dehumanization and alienation I experience every day at the hands of politicians and media platforms. I have had to resist every day of my life the transphobic, anti-immigrant, and racist rhetoric that is too often projected onto who I am. My name is Veronica Alvarez. I am a proud undocumented immigrant and I am a proud transgender woman.
Being undocumented in this country is not easy. I have had to learn how to navigate life without health insurance, without federal or state financial aid for school, and without any social support systems, most people living under the poverty line are able to access. The biggest obstacle I've had to live with is the daily fear of deportation: constantly having to think about a day where my parents, or myself, could be ripped away from our family.
I am starting this GoFund Me because I can't afford gender confirmation surgery. My situation has put me in a position where I need to ask for help. I don't know how much more I can take of being uncomfortable every minute of every day. Whenever I use the bathroom, take a shower, or change in the morning I am reminded of all the years of my life where I had to pretend to be someone I'm not. I know that with gender confirmation surgery my body will soon be my own. I just want to be comfortable in my own skin. I hope you can help. Thank you. I have my consultation on March 21st, 2019!
