My name is Veronica Miranda, I currently attend Los Angeles Pierce College in Woodland Hills, CA as a full time student. I also work full time in a laboratory in Valencia in order to cover my living expenses. I hope to graduate with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science. I have just been informed that I will not receive any aid for my Fall 2021 semester. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) basis for approval is determined by dependency. Since I was born in 1999 (cutoff year being 1998), I am still considered a dependent to my mother. She has been disabled and unemployed for several years due to back and neck issues but since she remarried, her husband's income is considered "her" income. I moved out of their home in 2017, at 18 years old, and have been on my own since then. I pay my own bills and rent, yet by the FAFSA's guidelines I am still considered a dependent. I am the first in my family to go to college and am trying to be the first to graduate from it. I have relied on FAFSA through my first 2 years of my college career to further my educational goals so now that this will stop being provided I am unsure if I will be able to afford it on top of my living expenses. I have maintained a 3.5 GPA or higher throughout my time in college making it to the Dean's List. Those that know me will attest to my extraordinary work ethic and motivation for school. Anything you can donate will be greatly appreciated.
