Help Veleta Heal and Find a Forever Home

While on a trip in Tulum, Mexico, a dog walked into a clothing store my friends and I were shopping in. At first he looked like many of the stray dogs you see around town, but we quickly noticed his back leg was badly injured and bleeding, and he was clearly limping.

We couldn’t walk away, so we took him to a veterinarian. The good news is that he has no fractures. The vet believes his injuries are lacerations, possibly from getting caught in a fence or barbed wire. His wounds were cleaned and treated, and thankfully they are not infected.

What stood out immediately was how gentle and calm he was. Despite being a stray and in pain, he allowed us to pick him up, ride in the car, and receive treatment without resistance. He was especially patient while receiving pain medication, which really surprised us.

We named him Veleta, after the store where we found him. Our plan is to get Veleta fully healed, neutered, vaccinated, and safely transported to New York, where my friend’s mother will foster him while we look for a permanent home. We are working with a professional pet transport service, but the combined medical and travel costs are significant.

Any amount helps and is deeply appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to read and support Veleta’s next chapter.

UPDATE:

We are working with a local animal transport company in Mexico, recommended through American Airlines Cargo, to safely bring him to the U.S. He has now been vaccinated, microchipped, and is scheduled to be neutered next week. He is expected to be cleared for travel about two weeks after his surgery. Until then, he is staying at a boarding facility where he is receiving his medication daily and being well cared for.

Beyond his physical recovery, what continues to amaze us most is Veleta’s temperament. He is sweet, playful, energetic, and very smart. Despite everything he’s been through, he seeks affection and connection. When I picked him up from the vet, he cuddled right up to me, clearly wanting love and attention.

We’re still raising funds to help cover the remaining costs of:
  • Veterinary care and neutering
  • Boarding and medications
  • Airline cargo transport and required documentation (this is the most expensive piece)

Every contribution, big or small, helps us get Veleta one step closer to his new life in New York. Thank you so much for supporting his journey and for believing in giving him a second chance. ❤️
