If you’ve ever walked into Bequest Coffee and been met with the warm smile of our chef Vaz, you already know, he’s someone special.

Vaz is a kind, humble, and generous soul who lives to serve others. Whether he’s preparing a lovingly crafted dish in the kitchen or chatting with his coworkers or regulars, he leads with heart and brings joy through his presence.

Now, he needs our help.

Vaz is facing a major hip replacement surgery, a critical step toward restoring his mobility and relieving the severe pain that has deeply affected his quality of life for the past years. But the journey doesn’t end there, his road to recovery will include months of physical therapy, medications, a caregiver, and time away from work.

As an immigrant who has called Washington home since 2008, Vaz has endured great hardship, having lived through war and the struggles of the former USSR. Yet despite his past, he has always chosen hope, compassion, and service to others.

We are rallying together to help this incredible man absorb the costs of his surgery and recovery so he can heal with peace of mind and return to doing what he loves: caring for others and creating food that brings people together.
