Vala’s mom here:
Vala started showing discomfort Sunday evening and vomited multiple times. She stopped eating but was still drinking and walking around to be close to her humans. By Monday she ate a few pieces of a treat and kept it down all day. But last night she became lethargic, unable to really walk, and vomited again. This morning we took her to the vet where they confirmed she had bladder stones and possibly kidney stones causing a blockage.
We transferred her to a hospital with specialists to get her an ultrasound. Her fever has continued to rise (105) even after IV fluids, two IV antibiotics, and a cooling mat. The ultrasound confirmed there is an obstruction to her right kidney. She needs surgery to prevent losing the kidney.
The hospital just informed us there is a back order of stents and we may be looking at driving her ourselves to San Diego where her urologist from UC Davis works.
After losing Archi so suddenly at the end of April this news comes as a shock and is devastating. Our kids are still coming to terms with Archi’s unexpected passing and now are panicked we will lose Vala as well.
Currently we are looking at about $10,000 BEFORE surgery. Our regular vet was just under $2,000 and the hospital quoted us $6,000 for the stay. We have not heard an estimate for surgery or recovery yet.
I am currently in a teaching credential program that prevents me from working (student teaching is unpaid) but I am subbing as much as I can. My husband was recently laid off and is still navigating finding a new job. We are embarrassed to ask for help but we really can’t stand the idea of losing her over the cost of treatment.
