On November 13, our community member and beloved grandmother Val Green (Nan) lost her entire home in a devastating duplex fire in Lloydminster. Val is newly retired, and one of the most selfless, gentle souls you will ever meet. She spent decades working in housekeeping at the Lloydminster Hospital, quietly caring for others long before herself.
This was supposed to be her very first peaceful Christmas in retirement…
Instead, she is starting over from nothing.
❤️ A Christmas She Was So Excited For… Gone Overnight
Christmas is Val’s favourite time of year. She’s the type who decorates every corner, every shelf, every window — creating a warm, magical home for her kids and grandkids. She had just finished her decorating for the season. She had already bought all her family’s gifts.
Hours later, everything she owned was destroyed.
The Home Is Now a Crime Scene — Nothing Can Be Recovered Yet
Because the duplex fire is still under active investigation, Val has not been allowed to enter her home or retrieve anything:
No clothes
No personal items
No medications
No Christmas decorations
No gifts
No keepsakes
No pet supplies
Everything is presumed lost due to fire, smoke, and water damage.
She is currently staying in a motel.
The Red Cross support period has ended.
Every night is an out-of-pocket cost she cannot sustain on a fixed retirement income.
Even in Disaster, Her Heart Was With Her Pets
Even in the moment she realized she had lost her home, Val’s first words weren’t about her belongings, they were about her pets.
Her priority was: “Are they safe? Where are they?”
That’s who she is.
Even in total loss, her instinct is to care for the most vulnerable around her.
✨ How You Can Help?
We are raising funds to help Val:
- Replace essentials (clothing, toiletries, medications)
- Cover motel costs while the fire investigation continues
- Start rebuilding a sense of home
- Care for her pets
- Restore even a small piece of the holiday magic she was so excited for
Anything helps.
Even the smallest donation brings comfort, stability, and hope to someone who has spent her life giving.
Val would never ask for help herself, but she truly needs her community now.
Thank you for reading, sharing, and supporting her through an unimaginable moment.
Every dollar helps her rebuild. Every share brings her closer to being home again.
