Val is my best friend of eight years, and she’s one of the kindest, funniest people I’ve ever known. Over the years, I’ve watched her face more challenges than anyone should have to endure. She lives in Oaxaca, Mexico. She is mute due to damaged lungs. She has nerve damage from sleeping on the floor for years. There is asbestos in the ceiling of her bathroom and arsenic in her water that’s making her even more sick. She is unable to work due to her disabilities and her family is abusive, they have no desire to help her. Her situation has gotten worse over time, and now she’s at a point where she feels hopeless and alone.

Val dreams of going to school, getting a degree, a passport, and moving somewhere she can build a better life. But right now, she can’t even afford to eat most days. She needs medication for her nerve issues and a safe place to live so she can attend school. I want to help her get out of this situation, but I can only do so much on my own. I’m terrified of waking up one day and finding out that my best friend is gone.
