The COVID-19 pandemic has decimated communities of color. Black residents account for over 50% of the total cases and 72% of virus-related fatalities in Chicago, even though they make up less than a third of the population. Despite facing a greater risk, the people in these communities have held our city together. Many earn a living as essential workers whose contributions often go unrecognized, including grocery store workers and janitorial staff. As members of our South Side community and as residents of our city they deserve a vaccine to keep themselves and their families safe from further devastation.
In order to contribute to vaccine equity on the South Side, a graduate student-led liaison at the University of Chicago is hosting a COVID-19 vaccination event in collaboration with Howard Brown Health. The event will be held Saturday May 22nd from 8:30 AM–4:30 PM for any individual 18 years or older residing in the South Side of Chicago.
Additionally, we are bringing in scientists from the University of Chicago and medical staff working in the Chicagoland area to do a Q&A on vaccine efficacy and safety.
We are partnering with the following organizations to help distribute vaccines to residents in various South Side communities:
○ Shiloh Seventh Day Adventists Church
○ Living Hope Church
○ Kids off the Block
○ Brave Space Alliance
○ Bridgeport Clinic
○ Centro Comunitario Juan Diego
○ Envision Community Center
○ iGrow Chicago
We are seeking funds to aid in buses that provide transportation of community members to and from our partner locations to the vaccination event venue on the South Side (TBD this week).
We are also in need of funds to prepare goodie bags with food and water for individuals who come to get the vaccine. Any unused proceeds will be distributed amongst our partner organizations, who to continue to support COVID-19 relief efforts on the South Side.
