Help Us With Books For Our Students

Donation protected

Liz and I are co-teaching Learning Transitions classes this term. This is a class for students who have learning disabilities in reading and math. The other day I was in a private call with a student doing a fluency assessment with him. When we finished I asked the student if he had any younger siblings that he could practice reading out loud with. His seven year old brother, who had been listening, popped on the screen and told me that they don’t have any books. He’s in first grade and hasn’t yet learned to read.

Most kids get put into special education programs in the third grade when all kids are benchmarked in reading and math. Reading outside of school is so important, especially for developing readers. As a result of this conversation, Liz sent out a survey to all of our students asking if they wanted books at home. Many of them do. These are kids that usually hate reading and so many said they wanted books!

Liz and I can only afford so many books on our teachers salary and we debated getting gently used books from friends, but there’s something magical about a kid getting a a package that contains a brand new book that is just for them. So we are asking for your help. If you can give anything to help us purchase books for our kids, we would appreciate and it would make their day. It may even spark something in them that they haven’t felt before: a love for reading!
Thank you so much!
