Help a Veteran Rebuild After Hurricane Helene: Matthew’s Fight for a Fresh Start

My name is Matthew T. Smith, and I’m a proud veteran who has served our country with honor. But today, I’m reaching out for your help to rise from the ashes of devastation and reclaim my life. I’m currently in Bath, New York, at a VA hospital, battling PTSD that was reignited when Hurricane Helene tore through Asheville, North Carolina, stripping me of everything I owned—my home, my tree-climbing gear, my chain saws, and my sense of stability. That storm didn’t just take my possessions; it triggered a mental health crisis that I knew I couldn’t ignore. So, I took action, checking myself into a 45-60 day treatment program to heal and rebuild my mind and body.

I’m not here to dwell on the loss—I’m here to fight for my future. In just a few weeks, I’ll return to Asheville with a renewed spirit and a clear goal: to get back on my feet and serve my community as the healthy, productive person I know I can be. I’ve been offered a lifeline—a camper to live in as I restart my life—but I need your help to make it a reality. The rent for a camper spot is between $950 and $1200, and I’m aiming to secure the first two months upfront as I recover from upcoming surgery to address stomach issues that have added to my challenges. This isn’t just about a place to stay; it’s about a foundation to rebuild my life.

My passion is tree work—it’s where I find my purpose, my value, and my joy. When I’m working, I’m not just earning a living; I’m helping others, clearing debris, and making a difference. But Hurricane Helene took my tools—my tree-climbing gear and chain saws—leaving me unable to return to the job I love. With your support, I can replace my equipment, get back to work, and contribute to my community’s recovery.

I’m asking for a hand up, not a handout. Your contribution will fuel my comeback, helping me cover the camper rent, address my health, and replace my work gear so I can stand tall again. Together, we can turn this chapter of hardship into one of hope and resilience. I’ve fought for our country, and now I’m fighting for my future—will you join me? Thank you from the bottom of my heart for believing in me. Let’s show the world what America’s spirit of support can do.
