Help us to lay Tony to rest

Donation protected
Firstly, thank you for the bottom of our hearts for taking the time to read this and even consider giving a donation. It is truly appreciated.

In order to give a little context, here is a little about Anthony (Tony) Adair and then his story:

Known affectionately as Big-T to his work colleagues and friends and as Tony to most other people, our Dad, it would be fair to say, was a well loved gentle giant of a man. Always to be found either weight training, in the garden, making something, decorating or baking when not at work, Tony was not one to sit around for very long.

He might have been a man of very few words and daft actions as we all can be at times, but it is fair to say he had the best of hearts and a very kind nature and we all loved him to pieces, as did his 2 young grandchildren Theya (8) and William (3).

Even though our hearts are breaking, recent days have also brought immense pride and comfort to us as we learned that Dad had signed up to donate his organs and may still be able to help others to live even though his life has been cut short.

A week ago today on Monday 25th January, all of our lives unexpectedly changed forever in the blink of an eye.

After being health conscious and a weight training fan for all of his life, our seemingly healthy, always-on-the-go Dad suffered a major heart attack and cardiac arrest at home with one one of us (Briar) and our mum.

Despite heroic efforts from Briar and mum succeeding in reviving him at home before the ambulance came, Dad continued to arrest and to be revived several more times on the way to and in hospital.

He was transferred to Wythenshaw hospital that evening where he underwent heart surgery to remove a blockage and add a stent and then further surgery to his leg in order to remove yet more blood clots. It turns out that the small, subtle symptoms Dad had originally put down to hard manual labour at work and getting older, were in fact the sign of what we now know to be Atherosclerosis (narrowing of the blood vessels) throughout his body. Even the doctor treating him said he has never seen such a case in his 15 years of practicing.

Dad has put up a monumental fight, which all who know him will agree is testament to his strong character and determination....but sadly, the damage to his body is simply beyond repair and he does not need to fight any longer. Once everyone has said their goodbyes, Tony's life support will be turned off with his loving daughters and our mum by his side as he finally finds peace.

We would also like to thank the immense efforts of the NHS staff at both Stepping Hill Hospital and Wythenshaw Hopstial for the amazing care, attention and dignity they have given our dad in his battle. They could not have done any more than they have and we know that they tried their best.

We know Dad was a proud man and would not want everyone knowing all of his business, but it is fair to say despite working hard even up until the morning of his accident, he did still struggle to keep the house, his car and other bills as a single man living alone. He was also not insured meaning we are unexpectedly left in the heartbreaking position of wanting to give him the send off he deserves (or at least as best we can under Covid guidelines), but not having the monetary capacity to do so.

We have decided to set up this fundraiser to try to provide a funeral and memorial for our Dad, not only to give him what he deserves, but also to give his 2 young grandchildren and ourselves somewhere to go to remember our superman dad/granddad/friend.

We are hoping the money can be used for a funeral service, cremation, flowers and all related costs as well as a lasting memorial in the form of a plaque, bench or whatever we can afford.

Please rest assured that all money will go towards this and to ensuring his beloved cat companions are looked after, and we have agreed that any surplus funding will go to help the work of the British Heart Foundation. As a family we are now in the position of looking to get investigations and testing for the same condition, as well as making our own lifestyle changes, but any research or work we can help with would obviously go a long way to providing a lasting legacy for him.

At the same time, even if we don't reach our 'best case scenario' target, we will still use all donations towards giving him the best we can as we understand that in these unprecedented times, things are hard for so many people. Any amount will be so gratefully received with love.

Both ourselves and our mum will take responsibility for funding, with Jade being the person withdrawing and distributing the final expenses.

Once again thank you so much for taking the time to read our story and help us during this unexpected and traumatic time.

Much love from Jade, Briar, Hazel, Theya, William and the entire family xxxx
