Help us tackle the plastic crisis in The Gambia

Plastic Crisis in The Gambia
The Gambia is abundant with biodiversity and coastal, urban and rural communities. Yet slowly they are being drowned by plastic. Discarded plastics are affecting fishermen along the coast, which reduces their catch rate. Rivers and mangroves are seeing plastic waste accumulate in the roots of trees, causing negative effects on the oyster farmers. Farmers and shepherds are being affected, as cattle and livestock are consuming plastic. In urban areas, the local markets are littered with plastic waste, which ends up blocking the gutters and causing flooding during the rainy season. All of these communities have witnessed an extensive rise in plastic waste and thus presents problems to their livelihoods.

How We Can Help
Precious Plastic Gambia tackles the plastic pollution crisis by collecting and recycling plastic waste from beaches and communities. Using specialized machinery, we transform this waste into high-quality products like beams, tiles and accessories. We also conduct workshops to educate about recycling and its benefits. Our goal is to create a sustainable, circular economy in The Gambia, reducing waste and promoting environmental sustainability.

Support us to develop our site, pay our staff, and expand our outreach. Join us in turning pollution into a solution and make a significant impact on reducing plastic waste.

Intended Results:
Precious Plastic Gambia aims to create a significant impact on the environment and local communities through our recycling initiatives. Our intended results include:

  • Environmental Education: Enhance environmental awareness and recycling knowledge in The Gambia through workshops and community engagement.
  • Employment Opportunities: Provide jobs to marginalized people, contributing to economic growth.
  • Sustainable Industry: Establish a robust plastic recycling industry in The Gambia, aiming for net-zero waste by recycling 80,000 - 100,000 kg of plastic annually.
  • Circular Economy: Develop a circular economy by turning plastic waste into valuable products, reducing pollution, and promoting sustainability.
  • Regional Leadership: Position The Gambia as a leading plastic recycling hub in West Africa, setting an example for neighboring countries.

Support our mission to make a lasting, positive impact on both the environment and the livelihoods of people in The Gambia.

Partners
We couldn’t do this without the incredible support of our partners! The National Environment Agency (NEA) and UNDP has been crucial in our journey, and has supported our development from inception. Huge thanks to Sustainable Design Studio and PBS Machinery for providing the machinery and training, providing invaluable guidance. We are grateful to anyone that works with us, including Footsteps Eco Lodge who have helped with plastic collections over the past year.

Your generosity and collaboration are what make our mission possible. Together, we’re turning plastic pollution into sustainable solutions, spreading environmental education, and creating jobs in The Gambia. We appreciate you being part of this amazing journey with us!

Thanks to the generous donations so far we have been able to:
  • Manufacture, ship and deliver three recycling machines from Europe
  • Finish the blockwork for the building
  • Register the company
  • Clear the land
  • Install windows and doors
  • Purchase and install a 3-phase meter
  • Employ a team of 5 recycling operators to kick-start the project

What's Next?
We’re excited about the next phase of our project! Here’s what’s coming up:

  • Complete the Site: The last step in site development is to install a large gate, allowing cars and vans to conveniently deliver plastic collections to the site.
  • Expand Collections: We’re looking to work with more waste collectors to ensure we gather as much plastic as possible for recycling.
  • Team Growth: We plan to bring on more local community members to help with our recycling efforts, including collecting, washing, and sorting plastics.

Help us move to the next phase and get closer to tackling plastic pollution in The Gambia. Your support makes a huge difference!
