This winter the sanctuary had to go through one of its most devastating times after a confirmation of avian influenza on site.
All 160+ birds on the sanctuary were killed or culled including chickens, cockerels, turkeys, guinea fowl, pigeons, ducks, geese, Rhea and an emu.
Aside from the traumatic heartbreak at losing so many much loved birds, the virus outbreak also had huge financial implications on the charity: vet bills, cooperating with APHA requirements, disposal and rebuilding of the birds accommodation, cleansing and sanitising the whole site, plus the additional costs of having to comply with the APHA licence restrictions for 12 months. This means increased feed costs as deliveries and donations are restricted.
But the biggest blow is that APHA are demanding £16,000 from the charity for them to test the main pig herd at the sanctuary. They’ve estimated the cost at bringing in a contractor to handle the pigs so they can be “safely presented for sampling.”
And because they’re saying they should’ve tested the pig two weeks ago, it’s now a matter of urgency and have therefore booked the testing in for Friday November 28th, despite the fact I categorically stated that this would be impossible and we couldn’t afford the £16,000, having less than £1000 at the charity’s disposal! I explained paying out £16,000 would take the sanctuary under…
But I’ve been told I can’t refuse the testing as it’s a matter of public health (even though the three most exposed pigs were created and same back negative,) so this gives the charity a week to raise the £16,000.
I HATE asking for monetary donations more than anything, but I’ve unfortunately, because it’s been such a turbulent 4 years for the sanctuary, I’ve had no choice.
So if you are in a position where you can donate something - no amount is too small - then please do so. It’s a huge, huge help and myself, the crew and the animals are all unbelievably grateful. I know I’m always saying it but.. this sanctuary couldn’t operate without the amazing support of the public.
So thank you, from the very bottom of my heart, and the Ranch animals - past, present and future.
