Help Us Support Sagan

What happened?

On June 4, 2020, Sagan suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage while surfing in Santa Monica, CA. He managed to get himself out of the water, where lifeguards spotted his lack of motor control and got him to the hospital. He then underwent invasive brain surgery to reduce the bleeding in his brain. This was the first night of critical care with 31 nights to date in the neurointensive care unit.

Sagan was kept in a medically-induced coma for over two weeks while the neurosurgical and neurocritical care teams worked around the clock to keep him alive. Currently, he is stable and doctors have slowly weaned him off the coma medication. He has beaten the odds, and continues to fight each day.

Sagan’s insurance will not cover the intensive therapies that will give him the best outcome possible. He will not be able to work for at least 12-18 months, and this will also take a toll on his ability to cover these expenses. Please help support Sagan’s recovery with whatever you can offer. The extent of damage from the bleeding is unknown, and every penny helps!

Who is Sagan West Fylak?

If we had to describe Sagan in one word, it’d be: heart. He is supremely compassionate, patient, and kind. Adored by everyone who meets him, he’s dedicated to living a life in alignment with what he values: his family and friends, art, music composition and performance, community engagement, education, and illuminating how we’re all connected to one another.

Please check out some of Sagan’s work here, and please feel free to follow him on IG @transonicsagan (although he won’t be posting for a while):

He was recently featured playing violin on Carrie Ingraham’s “Happy in Here.”

Sagan is a musician, multi-disciplinary artist, educator, and a trans member of the LGBTQ+ community in Los Angeles, CA. When the event happened he was working with the Integrated Media program at the California Institute of Arts (CalArts), and was continuing his work as a recording and performance artist. His music career began with his classical violin training. He then earned a bachelor’s degree in Music Technology from Northeastern University followed by an MFA (Master of Fine Arts) degree from CalArts in Music Performance and Composition with a specialty in Integrated Media. He has since expanded into experimenting ways of combining technology, spirituality, and of course, his first love: sound. Sagan is a skilled violinist, sound engineer, and incredible son, brother, colleague, and friend to many.

How Much?:

The amount we are asking for is: USD $175,000.

$175,000: Will get Sagan access to a rehab center or sub-acute facility that specializes in brain injury and recovery.

No amount is too little! Any amount you can give will go towards either paying the rehab center or one of the following things:

-Medical Equipment

-Medication

-Transportation

-Accommodations

-Groceries

-Storage

It is not yet clear what kind of treatment his health insurance will pay for, or what they’ll cover for the hospital stay, so your donation will go towards helping Sagan get the medical attention he will need.

Why?

Sagan’s road to recovery will be a long one. We already know he won’t be able to work for at least 12 to 18 months, perhaps longer. He will need specialized, round-the-clock neurological rehabilitation, and unfortunately the insurance doesn’t cover much rehabilitative care. And he will need, of course, to continue paying the everyday costs of living, without being able to work. However, with the proper, intensive rehabilitation Sagan could make a full recovery, be fully independent once again, and get back to bringing us amazing sound.

At a time like this, the last thing one should be worrying about is money. If you are able to spare any amount of money however big or small all of us who care so much about him, all around the world, will be ever grateful.

How else you can help:

Sagan values all of his relationships with friends and loved ones. Hearing from you, no matter how many times or how recently you’ve interacted with Sagan, would help support his healing and surround him with love. If you’d like to send a voice memo, video, pictures, or greeting in any form, please email them to [email redacted] Thank you for surrounding Sagan in love and hopefulness, just as he would for his loved ones!

As Sagan would say,

Be Sound,

From all of us who love Sagan and love you too!
