Help us support Melon’s road to recovery!

When life gives you lemons, have a sweet melon. I found Melon around 5:00 pm on Friday (6/21). I was driving back home from work and saw a dog walking in the middle of the road in 99° heat. I immediately pulled over and she trotted right up to me and tried to jump into my car- she’s so weak that she couldn’t do it by herself. She was quiet the whole drive back to my friend’s house who kindly let me borrow her home to quarantine Melon for the weekend. After food and water, she got a quick bath (she was petrified of it), a name, and we settled her down for the night.
Now we’re trying to figure out what to do next. Shelters are full in Richmond and across the country. We desperately need to get her vaccinations, spayed, and a wellness check- I’ve been actively trying to schedule her an appointment. We did not anticipate having a dog in the near future and we do not know how she is around cats, but we cannot let her down as she has been undoubtably many times. Hunter’s dogs are notoriously starved purposefully and abandoned in southern Virginia. So, we will protect her as best we can.
Melon is unspayed (has clearly had puppies before), has some kind of growth on one of her teats, is covered in ticks (I’ve been trying to get as many off as she is comfortable with), has multiple sores, is missing half a toe and another toenail, has continuous eye discharge, and is severely emaciated. She is also extremely sweet and people oriented, tries to follow me everywhere, is very quiet, and has not complained once about any care measures we have done so far. If you are interested in helping us support Melon’s road to recovery, we would appreciate all the help we can get!
Any leftover donations will go towards local animal shelters, to support and protect others like Melon!
