Since Thursday 26 February 2026, little Maxi is facing a battle no child should ever have to fight — and he needs your help.

About Maxi!

Maximiliano (Maxi) Custodio-Pellissier is a bright, inquisitive, and charming 4-year-old boy from Lima, Peru. He loves learning about nature, birds, insects, and dinosaurs. Less than a week ago, Maxi’s—and his parents’ (Priscila Pellisier and Omar Custodio) —life was upended unexpectedly. On Feb 26. 2026, after being rushed to an emergency clinic in Lima, they received the devastating news that Maxi was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor!

Within 24 hours after the heart-wrenching diagnosis, Maxi underwent surgery to remove the tumor that was endangering his life. Happily, the surgery was successful, but Maxi has only started a long path to battle the underlying cancer, and to recover his ability to walk and talk fully again, as these abilities have been affected by the surgery.

What Comes Next

Priscila and Omar, both doting parents, have suspended their lives to support Maxi with all the love and dedication they have always offered their amazing and courageous kid. They are supremely grateful that Maxi is still himself post-surgery. His cognitive ability has not been affected, but he is going to need significant support to endure chemotherapy, and long periods of physical and speech therapy. As you can imagine, besides the quick onslaught of terrible news, emergency surgery, and drastic changes in Maxi’s life, the emotional toll is high for Priscila and Omar—and of course for Maxi himself, who is having a hard time understanding that his body is not the same as it was just a few days ago.

The Financial Burden

This extremely difficult situation for the family is exacerbated by the financial burden that Maxi’s surgery and subsequent treatment will place on them. Medical expenses are pilling from just a few days at the clinic, not to mention the long path to recovery that Maxi will need to follow. We are hoping that joining efforts to support Maxi and his family can help alleviate this extremely difficult situation for them. This is why we are reaching out.

Priscila and Omar not only are bird lovers, researchers and conservationists themselves, but they have dedicated their time to educating students and the Peruvian public about the importance of taking pride in their country’s natural wonders and instilling a love of birds and nature. They are at the forefront of efforts to increase public awareness of birds and the enjoyment of nature even within the urban environments in Peru. The work they do brings communities together, people of all ages and abilities, and their work impact is local, regional, national and international. Maxi has been present and participated in many of these work activities. We hope that the huge community they are part of can return the support back to them at this time, so Priscila and Omar don’t have to worry about financial concerns and rather dedicate their energies to helping Maxi succeed in the extremely difficult and long battle ahead.

Desde el Jueves 26 de Febrero de 2026, el pequeño Maxi enfrenta

una batalla que ningún niño debería librar, y necesita tu ayuda.

Acerca de Maxi!

Maximiliano (Maxi) Custodio-Pellissier es un niño de 4 años brillante, curioso y encantador y vive en Lima, Perú. Le encanta aprender sobre la naturaleza, las aves, los insectos y los dinosaurios. Hace menos de una semana, la vida de Maxi—y la de sus padres (Priscila Pellisier y Omar Custodio)—dio un giro inesperado. El jueves 26 de Febrero del 2026 después de ser trasladado de urgencia a una clínica en Lima, recibimos la devastadora noticia de que a Maxi le diagnosticaron un tumor cerebral maligno!

En menos de 24 horas tras el desgarrador diagnóstico, Maxi fue sometido a una cirugía de emergencia para extirpar el tumor que ponía en peligro su vida. Afortunadamente, la operación fue un éxito, pero Maxi ha comenzado un largo camino para combatir el cáncer y recuperar su capacidad de caminar y hablar plenamente, ya que estas habilidades se han visto afectadas por la operación.

Lo que se viene

Priscila y Omar, como padres han suspendido sus vidas para apoyar a Maxi con todo el amor y dedicación que siempre le han dado a su increíble y valiente hijo. Están sumamente agradecidos de que Maxi siga siendo él mismo tras la operación. Su capacidad cognitiva no se ha visto afectada, pero va a necesitar mucho apoyo para soportar la quimioterapia y largos periodos de fisioterapia y terapia de lenguaje. Como pueden imaginar, además de esta avalancha de malas noticias, cirugías de emergencia y cambios drásticos en la vida de Maxi, el desgaste emocional es alto para Priscila y Omar—y, por supuesto, para el propio Maxi, que tiene dificultades para entender que su cuerpo no es el mismo de hace solo unos días.

La presión financiera

Esta situación extremadamente difícil para la familia se ve agravada por la carga económica que la cirugía de Maxi y el tratamiento posterior tienen para ellos. Los gastos médicos se están acumulando tras solo unos días en la clínica, sin mencionar el largo camino hacia la recuperación que Maxi tendrá que seguir. Esperamos unir esfuerzos para apoyar a Maxi y a su familia y que pueda ayudar a aliviar esta situación tan difícil para ellos.
