This year, Can Samba turns 10.

For a decade we've filled the streets with rhythm, built extraordinary costumes by hand, trained musicians and dancers, and created space for people of all backgrounds to step into confidence, power and joy.

We are not just a Samba band.

We are a community.

We are a movement of celebration, resistance and belonging.

Over the past year, we've faced significant changes. We lost our long-term making studio and rehearsal space due to circumstances beyond our control. Like many arts organisations, we've also felt the impact of shrinking council budgets, increased costs and reduced bookings.

But Carnival teaches resilience. When the road shifts, we build a new one.

We have secured a new studio — and the work of making it a home is well underway. Walls are up, materials are being unpacked, and the space is slowly coming alive with the colour and craft that define everything we do. It's a place where we can design, produce, teach and grow.

A beginners' intake programme

New Pride butterflies and giant dancing skulls

Bold new work for our 10th anniversary year

For ten years we have paid our musicians and performers — because art is work, and community should never rely on unpaid labour. We are proud of that commitment, and we intend to continue it.

What we need

We are raising funds to cover six months of studio costs — including rent and the deposit we needed to secure the space in the first place. Three months stabilises us. Six months gives us the breathing room to grow, to create, and to properly launch everything we've been building toward.

We'll be honest: this build has taken everything. Between setting up the new studio from scratch, managing the full weight of running a ten-year-old organisation, and navigating the physical setbacks that come with being only human, we are tired. Reaching six months' funding isn't just about finances — it's about being able to exhale, and do this work with the care and energy it deserves.

Anything over our target will go toward:

Costume production for our 10th anniversary

Installing skylights to bring light into our studio space
