Help Us Send Hope to Zambia

A simple conversation in a Sunday running group has grown into something extraordinary.

Over the past few weeks, The Drop Inn Community CLG (Project Hope), led by Gareth Hayes, partnered with Kevin McColgan and Team Zambia from Scoil Íosagáin, Buncrana, to give a second life to hundreds of school resources that would otherwise have been discarded.

What began with a few phone calls quickly became a community-wide mission. Volunteers, members of the school staff, local businesses, parents, pupils and the Buncrana community came together with one shared goal: to fill a 40-foot shipping container with much-needed educational resources for a newly built school in Zambia.

On Friday 26th June, more than 40 volunteers worked tirelessly for two days to empty classrooms, carefully pack books, stationery, furniture, computers, sports equipment, bicycles, kitchen units, shelving, doors, plumbing fixtures and countless other reusable items.

Throughout the days, one thought kept being repeated:
"Imagine all of this would have ended up in a skip."

Instead, these resources will help create classrooms, furnish two school and provide opportunities for children who have very little.

The new schools in Zambia have been built entirely through charitable donations and volunteer efforts. Every desk, chair, book, toy and piece of equipment we send will make a real difference to children who deserve the opportunity to learn in a safe, welcoming environment.

The generosity shown by our community has been incredible.
Shaun Doherty of AMPCO Builders generously donated the shipping container, Duffy Plant Hire provided storage facilities, local businesses and the new school builders Boyle Construction made financial contributions, parents donated bicycles, the Scoil Íosagáin Student Council contributed funds from their bake sale, and dozens of volunteers gave up their time to make this project possible.

Now we need your help.

The container is packed and ready to go, but we must now raise the funds to transport it from Belfast docks to Zambia. Without this funding, the container cannot make its journey.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings us one step closer to delivering these vital resources to the children who need them most.

Your generosity will help cover:
• Shipping and transport costs from Ireland to Zambia
• Port and customs charges
• Delivery of the container to the schools supported by Project Hope

This project is about much more than sending furniture and books. It is about showing children in Zambia that people across the world care about their future. It is also about teaching our own children in Buncrana the importance of generosity, sustainability and global citizenship.

As Scoil Íosagáin moves into Phase 1 of its wonderful new school, it is hoped that this marks the beginning of a lasting partnership with the school in Zambia through a sister-school relationship, allowing pupils from both communities to learn from one another for years to come.

If you are in a position to donate, no matter the amount, you will be helping turn an act of kindness into a life-changing opportunity for hundreds of children.

Thank you for your support. Together, we can send not just a shipping container, but hope.
