Help us send Alicia to Washington DC!!

Dear Friends and Family,
We are very excited to tell you that Alicia was nominated by her teacher to attend a youth leadership conference in Washington DC this summer!!! We are very proud of her for being nominated for this conference. We would very much like for her to attend because we feel this would be an amazing opportunity for her to learn about the potential she has within her and help her strive in any direction she chooses for her future. The conference is at the end of June and she will be there for a week. We applied for a scholarship and she was awarded $250.00, which was applied to her tuition, but we still need to raise a bit more for her tuition, flight and expenses.
Here is a copy of the letter we received:

Dear Parent,
Congratulations! Based on her academic achievement and demonstrated leadership potential at Empower Charter School, Alicia has been nominated by Educator Gonzalez to attend the Junior National Young Leaders Conference (JrNYLC), a six-day Envision by WorldStrides program held in Washington, D.C. this summer.
Since 1985, Envision's experiential learning programs have helped more than 800,000 high-achieving students, like Alicia, expand their leadership abilities, discover their passion for a future career, and realize the power of their potential.
At JrNYLC, your daughter will get invaluable hands-on experience and develop lifelong success skills among fellow high-achieving students. Alicia will enjoy:
• Inspirational Speakers: Students gain insights from change agents like Anthony Robles, a three-time all-American wrestler who won the 2010-11 NCAA individual wrestling championship in the 125-pound weight class despite being born with only one leg.
• Leadership Development: Students explore problem solving through the lens of American history and discover how to apply leadership strategies to everyday challenges.
• Real-World Solutions: Students collaborate to create action-oriented solutions during the Voices of Change project, which allows them to agree upon and plan an element of community service they can take home to make a positive difference at their school, in their community, or in the world.
• Historic Site Visits: Some of the sites students will visit include the memorials for The Korean and Vietnam Wars, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, and more.

We look forward to having Alicia join us this summer.
Sincerely,

Jan Sikorsky, Ph.D.
