Help us save this Albanian dog’s life

During our vacation in Albania, we found a completely malnourished female dog in Lukovë, with a skin condition that, in addition to its terrible appearance, causes her constant discomfort and itching.

In addition to this unfortunate state, she was chased away whenever she asked for food and even physically attacked. We witnessed with our own eyes a man hitting her with a stick. Unfortunately, a sick animal evokes disgust rather than compassion.

She was starving, and we gave her food, but this would only be a temporary solution.

And here begins our problem.

First of all, we were concerned that she might have puppies to nurse, given the appearance of her nipples. However, after observing her for two days and asking some people, we found that there are no puppies; they have probably died or were killed.

We tried to contact local associations, but they are completely overwhelmed and cannot take any more cases (Albania has a serious problem with abandoned animals).

We took her to the veterinarian today (Pet Care Veterinary Clinic Sarande) and concluded that the only solution to save her life is to take her to Portugal. However, our flight is in two days (13/09), and the dog cannot enter the EU until she is healthy and has a microchip, vaccinations, and the necessary documents.

The veterinarian estimates that the dog will need a month to be treated.

During this consultation, we did a rapid leishmaniasis test (which was negative!), dewormed her, conducted dermatological exams to identify the skin disease (we will receive the results tomorrow), and started medication to inhibit milk production (to prevent possible mastitis).

During this month, she will need to stay in the clinic; a microchip will be implanted, and the necessary vaccinations will be given.

Afterward, the easiest method will be to create a passport and get her the documentation needed to be registered in the EU. At the end of it all, we will have to transport her from Albania to Portugal.

The initial consultation and the first night will cost 112€.

Here is the estimate for the next costs:

⁃ Passport, vaccinations, and microchip: 70€

⁃ One month of hospitalization: 330€

⁃ Documentation to be registered in the EU: 50-120€

⁃ Transport of the dog to Portugal: 600€

Without a collective effort we won’t succeed

This girl, despite having no reason to do so, continues to trust humans and is the sweetest thing. She is estimated to be around 3 years old.

Durante as nossas férias na Albânia, encontrámos, em Lukovë, uma cadela completamente subnutrida e com uma condição de pele que, para além de ter um péssimo aspeto, não lhe dá paz e faz com que se coce constantemente.

Além deste estado infeliz, era escorraçada sempre que pedia comida e mesmo agredida fisicamente. Testemunhámos um homem bater-lhe com um pau. Infelizmente, um animal doente causa nojo em vez de compaixão.

Estava esfomeada e demos-lhe comida, mas ficar por aí seria uma solução temporária.

E Aqui começa o nosso problema.

Antes de mais, tínhamos a preocupação de ela ter cachorros para amamentar devido ao aspeto das suas maminhas. Mas, após observá-la durante dois dias e perguntar a algumas pessoas, verificámos que não há cachorros; provavelmente morreram ou foram mortos.

Tentámos contactar associações locais, mas estas estão completamente sobrecarregadas e não aceitam mais casos (a Albânia tem um sério problema de animais abandonados).

Levámo-la hoje ao veterinário (Pet Care Veterinary Clinic Sarande) chegámos à conclusão de que a única solução para salvar esta vida é levá-la para Portugal. No entanto, o nosso voo é daqui a dois dias (13/09), e a cadela não pode entrar na UE enquanto não estiver saudável e tiver microchip, vacinas e os documentos necessários.

O médico veterinário estima que a cadela precise de um mês para ser tratada.

Nesta consulta, fizemos o teste rápido da leishmaniose (que deu negativo!), desparasitámo-la, realizámos exames dermatológicos para identificar a doença de pele (receberemos o resultado amanhã) e começámos a medicação para inibir a produção de leite (para prevenir uma possível mastite).

Durante este mês, ela terá de ficar internada; será colocado o microchip e serão administradas as vacinas necessárias.

Depois, o método mais fácil será criar um passaporte e tratar da documentação necessária para an registar na UE. No final de tudo, vamos ter de a transportar da Albânia para Portugal.

Esta primeira consulta e a primeira noite custarão 112€.

Esta menina, embora sem razão para tal, continua a confiar nos humanos e é a coisa mais doce. Estima-se que tenha 3 anos.
