Libassa Wildlife Sanctuary is the only wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center in Liberia for all species except chimpanzees and we urgently need your help. Pangolins are one of the most unique and endangered animals on the planet, but sadly, they are also one of the most misunderstood. These gentle creatures are victims of illegal poaching, habitat loss, and environmental threats. At our sanctuary, we are dedicated to rescuing and rehabilitating pangolins to give them the chance to live safely in the wild once more.
Right now, we are caring for 169 animals of which seven pangolins at various stages of rehabilitation: Six White-Bellied Pangolins and one Black-Bellied Pangolin. Our sanctuary is committed to providing a safe and nurturing environment for pangolins who have been injured, orphaned, or left in dire need of care.
The rehabilitation process for a pangolin is time-consuming and intensive. Our baby pangolins are fed every 3-4 hours, day and night—6 times a day—and require frequent walks to help strengthen their legs, improve their health, and learn to eat termites and ants. For the juveniles and adults in our care, we take them on two daily walks lasting up to 1.5 hours to help them regain strength and endurance.
Yesterday, we received a new baby White-Bellied Pangolin weighing only 341 grams. Sadly, this little one is in critical condition. He arrived severely dehydrated, covered in abscesses, and with a broken, dislocated hind leg. His injuries are extensive, and his recovery will be long and challenging. This new arrival is just one example of how urgent our work is. Without immediate intervention and ongoing care, many pangolins like him would not survive.
To give pangolins like this baby the best possible care, we urgently need advanced medical equipment. An x-ray machine, gas anesthesia and ultrasound, for instance, would allow us to better diagnose and treat injuries like fractures, dislocations, and internal trauma. With these tools, we could provide faster, more accurate care for our pangolins, improving their chances of recovery and eventual release. Right now, we must rely on external human hospitals, which do not always want to help us and which can delay critical treatments and increase stress for already vulnerable animals.
We need your help to continue this vital work. Funds raised will go directly toward:
• Medical care for injured or sick pangolins, including pharmacy bills, medications, surgeries, and vital diagnostic equipment like an x-ray machine and ultrasound.
• Feeding and hydration for babies who need specialized diets and regular feedings.
• Walks and exercise to help pangolins regain strength and prepare for release.
• Enclosures and equipment to keep our pangolins safe and comfortable during their rehabilitation.
Every donation, no matter how small, makes a difference. With your help, we can continue to provide the care these incredible creatures desperately need. We are deeply grateful for any support you can give—whether through a donation, sharing our story, or spreading awareness about the plight of pangolins.
If you know someone that is traveling to Liberia and has some space left in their luggage, please contact us. We have a very long list of things we need.
Thank you for supporting the future of these amazing creatures!
