Matt and I have been enjoying Mexico for the past week but last night we witnessed the most devastating thing- This sweet puppy was run over by a car and lay screaming in the street unable to use his back legs. We ran over and scooped him up off the road as cars honked impatiently waiting for us to get out of the way. We rushed him
to the local vet who did X-rays, blood work and an ultrasound. This poor baby has two pelvic fractures, one sacroiliac fracture, one hip fracture one ischium fracture and a rib fracture he is also heartworm positive. We were referred to a surgeon in a different state for a consult, today we drove him to the surgeon who miraculously confirmed there is no internal bleeding, his bladder and liver are intact, his lung was not punctured by the rib and the ultrasound revealed no mature worms in his heart or arteries. He will be able to make a full recovery with surgery and treatment. Unfortunately logistics aren’t working in our favour. The surgeon is not confident doing repairs of the pelvis and won’t perform the surgery on his hip for another month then there is another month of recovery before he would be cleared to fly. The costs to board the dog at the vet awaiting the surgery and for the recovery, the medication, the cost of additional flights and the cost of the surgery itself quickly add up to nearly the same costs of treatment in Canada. Matt and I we are already $1000 deep trying to save this little guy who we’ve lovingly named Squeegee after we squeegeed this little pancake off the road. We are hoping to raise funds to bring this little guy home with us for treatment in Canada on Dec 4th. I have been in touch with our regular vet who has confirmed these injuries require surgery. The anticipated costs will range from $4000-8000. Anything you are willing to contribute will help, we will cover the rest. In the event there were excess funds not used for his care we would donate to an animal rescue in Mexico that helps other street pups like Squeegee.
