Three months ago, we rescued a young filly named Shoshana after she was found abandoned in a field, left to starve and survive on her own. From the moment we brought her home, we promised her safety, love, and a life free from the neglect she had suffered.

As she began her recovery, the reason for her abandonment slowly became clear. Shoshana has equine OCD (osteochondritis dissecans) — a serious yet treatable joint condition that has caused a piece of bone to fragment and float within her joint. This fragment has now caused a painful joint infection, putting her at significant medical risk.

Just a few days ago, Shoshana suffered a new and serious injury. While running in the field, she likely slipped, tearing the sesamoid ligaments at the back of her hock. This has caused the sesamoid bone to become displaced, adding severe pain and instability to an already fragile situation.

What the vets have told us

Our vet and the equine hospital have explained that:

• Her OCD is chronic and will require surgery to resolve it

• The torn ligaments and displaced sesamoid bone also require surgical intervention

• Before any surgery can begin, they must flush the hock joint and treat the infection with aggressive antibiotics

• Her prognosis remains “reserved”, meaning she still has a fighting chance — but only with immediate and intensive care

Even with everything she’s endured, Shoshana remains gentle, trusting, and full of heart. She wants to keep going. She just needs the chance.

What we need

The estimated cost of her treatment, joint flush, hospitalisation, and surgeries is approximately 3,200€.

For our small rescue, this is a huge amount — but we will not give up on her.

Whether she is ever rideable in the future doesn’t matter to us. All we want is for Shoshana to have comfort, dignity, and a pain-free life.
