Help Us Save Rory after Vitamin D Toxicity

Donation protected
Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out with a heavy heart to ask for support for our beloved dog Rory, our 5-year-old dachshund mix with the kindest soul you’ll ever meet. She’s not just a pet, she's my best friend, my heart dog, and truly is like family to us.

On Thursday, July 31, our lives turned upside down. Rory managed to climb onto my vanity by jumping on my beauty chair, where she got into a bottle of extra strength Vitamin D soft gels. By the time we discovered the empty bottle, we estimate she had consumed about 100 capsules.

We rushed her to the ER immediately. While they attempted to induce vomiting and administered charcoal and medication, her body had already metabolized the vitamin D. Her initial bloodwork looked normal, and we were sent home with hope, but with strict instructions to retest her blood every 24 hours for four days.

Over those next few days, her calcium levels dangerously climbed, showing hypercalcemia due to Vitamin D toxicity. She has been in and out of the hospital since Thursday, 4 out of 6 nights spent overnight in the hospital and not at home.

I am lucky enough to be in the vet field, but even with discounts, we are already in the thousands in vet bills and still have a long road ahead.

After 2 days of hospitalization her calcium finally started to trended down. But after two days at home, her levels are elevated to the point of hospitalization again.

This will be an ongoing battle for the next month to make sure her calcium levels stay normal. She’ll have days where she can come home and then days she’ll need hospitalization. She’ll need ongoing daily bloodwork, daily monitoring, subcutaneous fluids at home, and 6–8 weeks of prednisone treatment. These expenses are quickly adding up, especially as we prepare for our wedding in just a few weeks.

This happened the night before my bachelorette trip, and while I should’ve been celebrating, I spent most of it on the phone with vets, poison control, and in tears. We never expected to be facing a life-threatening emergency like this so close to our wedding.

Rory is the sweetest girl. Everyone who meets her falls in love with her gentle spirit. She’s our pride and joy, and we’re doing everything in our power to give her the best chance. I always told her she had to live to 20 and I still believe she can, with help.

If you’re able to donate, even a small amount would help us cover her past and possible future hospitalizations, upcoming blood tests, medications, kidney care vet diet, and ongoing care. If you’re not in a place to give, please consider sharing this page, we’d be endlessly grateful.

Thank you for reading, for caring, and for loving Rory with us.
With love,
Amanda, Kevin, and Rory
