We are a small family owned and operated ice cream store in Maui and have been in operation since 2018. My husband and I work in the store everyday, he runs the front and I hand-make our ice cream and bakery treats each day. Our business is located in Kihei and prior to Covid-19 our business was driven solely by tourism (over 80%) and in March of 2020 that came to an abrupt halt.
We were forced to close in March due to Maui Covid-19 mandates and though were able to open in the summer for to-go service and for full service in October when the travel ban was lifted we have continued to struggle. Since reopening we have been able to open our doors everyday and have brought all of our staff back with a few minor hiccups, mostly stemming from equipment issues from the shut down. This week-end our stores AC unit failed which has us closing our doors again...with all of our 2020 business losses we are struggling to cover the costs of loss of business, the replacement of equipment and loss of inventory due to the high temperatures in our shop.
2020 has been an incredibly humbling year, which has drained our bank accounts but we continue to try our hardest to open our doors for our family and our staff. Through our struggles we have continued to try to remain positive that things will turn around and believe it will. We know we are extremely fortunate to live where we live and to have our family close and in good health. However, this last hit is the one that is hitting us the hardest, if we are unable to repair our air conditioning we will most likely not be able to re-open our store.
We struggle with asking for help this way when there are so many others that have needs across the country, we know we are not the only ones facing many types of loss at this time. But we ask for help because we opened our business to build a future for our autistic 8 year old son who loves his ice cream store and can't wait to work in the shop when he is old enough.
Helping us to survive another challenge during this time of Covid would mean everything to us because it helps us to continue to protect his future.
We appreciate any assistance you could give and if you can't we appreciate you taking the time to read our story.
