Help us save our Storm

Our boy Storm is 3 and a half year old Staffy x Husky. The most playful, clever dog we've ever known.

June last year he was really sick and was diagnosed with Pancreatitis, likely caused by steroids he was given to treat inflammation.

In November he had extensive blood tests and X-rays following bouts of sickness over the previous 5 months. The vets believed he likely had Irritable Bowel Disorder, an inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, which we had to manage via his diet and supplements.

After an exceptionally bad bout of sickness, we got an emergency referral to Wear Referrals who have been amazing and finally identified his issues. So far they have fitted a feeding tube so we can feed him and administer his medication at home. He now needs extensive surgery.

They suspect that Storm had a ruptured ulcer which subsequently adhered to his pancreas creating a fistula. As a consequence of this abnormal association between the two organs, the stomach wall is very thickened and inflamed causing a narrowing of the gastric outflow and an abnormal movement of its walls. The results of these changes are a partial obstruction of the food passing from the stomach to the intestine. He also has a hole in the wall of his intestine due to another ulcer.

There are no reported cases of this combination of issues in dogs so there isn't a clear path ahead. The surgeons are hoping to be able to separate his pancreas from stomach and intestine, and then take fat to cover the affected areas, plug the holes and keep the organs separate.

If part of his pancreas has to be removed he will have diabetes for the rest of his life.

We do have insurance but this only covers £6000, the estimate for all of his treatment is a minimum of £15000 to £18000.
