Beauty Botanica has been a pillar in the Oakland community, centering queer space. It was founded over 7 years ago. The upstairs of our salon has been inhabited by The Yoni Day Spa, an incredible wellness salon spearheaded by the talented Ashley Atsu. We are teaming up to create this gofundme because our salon and spa needs help!

 

Our landlord is an elder in the community with limited means to update the building to support the salon and spa. The space is sorely needing updates for safety and function. We are asking our community for help because we have to make these upgrades one way or another. We are choosing to not involve the city because that would lead to many fines for our landlord whom we have a good relationship with. She gave Beauty Botanica a chance when it first opened and we are going to figure this out together.

 

What we need:

The electrical system has never been updated since the owner acquired the building 26 years ago. She has come upon hard ships with her health and has no children and relies on the care of her niece (her only fam in the US).

We have been doing renovations out of our own pocket, and the building is no longer able to support the electricity that we need to run our businesses. We have been experiencing electrical outages and surges that are dangerous and scary. We have hired an electrician and are going to rewire the building.

Along with our electrical needs, the upstairs spa needs a new large window replacement.

With the funds raised, we will be paying for electric work, the window, begin a build out of a ADA accessible bathroom, along with a down payment on buying the building from our landlord.

 

A little about Beauty Botanica (downstairs salon)

Olivia Bianco Chaidez is the owner operator of this queer centered salon. She specializes in creative color, gender affirming haircuts, and event organizing. The salon is not only a place to get your hair done but also a gathering space and sanctuary for queer and trans folks.

 

A little about The Yoni Day Spa (upstairs spa)

The Yoni Day Spa, founded by Ashley Asatu in 2017, is a Black woman-owned modern wellness brand that utilizes ancient herbal remedies and spiritually-affirming practices to educate and to heal Black bodies.
