URGENT UPDATE – JANUARY 2026: After surviving cardiac arrest and a heartbreaking initial prognosis, Moon Pie has a new chance at life. Following a specialized consultation at the University of Missouri, the oncology team now believes her heart mass is a slow-growing type that can be treated with advanced Stereotactic Radiation (SRT).
We are currently raising an additional $2,500 for a critical CT Scan this week to map out her treatment. This is the "GPS" needed to save her heart and give her years of happy life. Please see our latest Update post (Jan 4th) for the full story of the "phone call that changed everything" and her sister Crown Sundae’s weekend in the country.
URGENT UPDATE – DECEMBER 2025: After bravely beating heartworm and recovering from her life on the streets, Moon Pie is facing her biggest fight yet. She recently survived cardiac arrest and has been diagnosed with a mass near her heart. We are headed to the University of Missouri Oncology team on December 31st to fight for her life. Please see our latest Update post for the full story of her recovery and this new emergency.
How it all began... (Moon Pie’s Rescue Story):
Moon Pie was found fearfully shaking in a pile of trash and dead leaves the weekend of the April 2024 solar eclipse in Downtown West St. Louis.
First discovered starving, skin-and-bones, in the parking lot of the King Bee Lofts, by neighbors Meagan Wilson and Lisa Marie Thalhammer. They called multiple local shelters all saying that they were completely full and could not help. So Meredith Barry drove over to the pup's rescue with a loop leash and a pound of salami. Surrounding the bushes, Meagan crawled in and courageously but carefully leashed the poor frightened animal. The pup immediately relieved hopped easily into Meagan's car and we brought her to Meredith's home.
The poor exhausted dog slept for 24 hours straight, terrified to leave the bed! Eventually still shaking in fear, she went out to pee but quickly wanted to go back in the house, scared that she would again be left on the streets.
Later that day, we gave her a bath and that's when she truly transformed. "She quickly turned into the sweetest baby angel, and we just want to give her a fighting chance to recover and get all the love she deserves," says Meredith.
She likely gained five pounds in just the first few days. When she went to the vet, we found out the she had no chip, is not spayed and also has a cracked rotten tooth that needs extraction. Then the following day her heartworm test came back positive.
Heartworms are spread through mosquitoes and are foot long spaghetti-looking parasites that attack the heart and lungs. Without treatment this disease can lead to permanent organ damage and death. This treatment alone is estimated to cost $2000+ and total costs to get MoonPie healthy will likely be 4-5K.
We believe that all creatures deserve to be treated with respect and care. Thank you your time reading Moon Pie's story and we truly appreciate any monetary support you can give to help us save her life.
With Love,
Lisa Marie, Meredith & Meagan
