Many of you may be dog parents, others simply dog lovers, and some just kind-hearted people. I am reaching out today to ask for your help for our beloved dog, Koko.

Koko is 8 years old and the youngest of our three dogs. Over the years, she has been by our side through so many chapters of our lives, bringing a quiet and beautiful kind of joy that is hard to put into words. Everyone who meets her says the same thing. There is something special about Koko. She has a peaceful presence, a calmness in her eyes, and a gentle and loving spirit that you can feel the moment you are around her. She truly is a beautiful soul in a dog’s body and fills our hearts with love every single day.

On March 11, we noticed a small black lump on her left paw. At first, we hoped it was something minor, like a cyst or an abscess. When it did not improve, we took her to a veterinarian on March 14 for testing. We were told that a biopsy would be needed to know for sure.

On March 18, 2026, everything changed. Koko began hyperventilating, and we rushed her to an emergency vet in San Diego. There, they performed a fine needle aspiration and gave us the news we feared. Koko was diagnosed with stage 1 melanoma.

The veterinarian recommended immediate surgery to remove the affected toe, also known as the phalange, to help prevent the cancer from spreading. On March 19, Koko underwent surgery and the toe was removed. The biopsy results later confirmed stage 1 melanoma, but an aggressive form.

As dog owners, we know our time with them is never long enough. Being faced with the possibility of losing her sooner than expected is heartbreaking. Koko is family, and we want to give her every chance to keep living a happy and comfortable life.

On April 13, we met with a veterinary oncologist who recommended continuing treatment with the ONCEPT melanoma vaccine. This treatment consists of four initial injections given every two weeks, followed by booster shots every six months. Each treatment costs approximately $1,180, bringing the total for the initial series to around $7,080, not including additional costs such as imaging like X-rays, CT scans, and follow-up care.

So far, we have already faced significant expenses from emergency visits, surgery, biopsy, imaging, and her first vaccine dose. The costs are quickly adding up, and we are reaching a point where we cannot manage this on our own.

We want to be transparent about how your support will help Koko. The funds raised will be used to cover her ongoing medical care, including ONCEPT melanoma vaccine treatments, veterinary oncology visits, follow-up exams, diagnostic testing, imaging such as X-rays and CT scans, medications, and any additional care she may need during this process.

We are doing everything we can for Koko because she is not just a dog. She is part of our family. Now we are humbly asking for your help.

Koko tiene 8 años y es la más pequeña de nuestras tres perritas. A lo largo de los años, ha estado a nuestro lado en tantas etapas de nuestra vida, dándonos una alegría tranquila y hermosa que es difícil de describir con palabras. Todos los que la conocen dicen lo mismo. Hay algo especial en Koko. Tiene una presencia muy tranquila, una calma en su mirada y un espíritu dulce y amoroso que se siente desde el momento en que estás cerca de ella. Koko es realmente un alma hermosa en el cuerpo de un perro y llena nuestros corazones de amor todos los días.

El 11 de marzo notamos una pequeña bolita negra en su patita izquierda. Al principio pensamos que podía ser algo menor, como un quiste o un absceso. Cuando no mejoró, la llevamos al veterinario el 14 de marzo para hacerle estudios. Nos dijeron que sería necesaria una biopsia para saber con certeza.

El 18 de marzo de 2026 todo cambió. Koko comenzó a hiperventilar y la llevamos de urgencia a un veterinario en San Diego. Ahí le realizaron una aspiración con aguja fina y nos dieron la noticia que temíamos. Koko fue diagnosticada con melanoma en etapa 1.

El veterinario recomendó una cirugía inmediata para remover el dedo afectado, también conocido como falange, para ayudar a prevenir que el cáncer se propagara. El 19 de marzo Koko fue operada y le removieron el dedo. Los resultados de la biopsia confirmaron melanoma en etapa 1, pero de tipo agresivo.

Como papás de perritos, sabemos que el tiempo con ellos nunca es suficiente. Enfrentar la posibilidad de perderla antes de lo esperado nos lastima demasiado. Koko es parte de nuestra familia, y queremos darle todas las oportunidades para que siga viviendo una vida feliz y cómoda.

El 13 de abril tuvimos consulta con una oncóloga veterinaria, quien recomendó continuar el tratamiento con la vacuna contra el melanoma ONCEPT. Este tratamiento consiste en cuatro aplicaciones iniciales cada dos semanas, seguidas de refuerzos cada seis meses. Cada aplicación tiene un costo aproximado de $1,180, lo que da un total de alrededor de $7,080 para la serie inicial, sin incluir estudios adicionales como radiografías, tomografías y seguimiento médico.

Hasta ahora ya hemos enfrentado gastos significativos por consultas de emergencia, cirugía, biopsia, estudios y la primera dosis de la vacuna. Los costos siguen aumentando y estamos llegando a un punto en el que no podemos cubrirlos por nuestra cuenta.

Queremos ser transparentes sobre cómo su apoyo ayudará a Koko.
